Former Archbishop Conti
Ten years ago I wrote this story: the eloquent voices of Nazareth House orphans.
The Catholic Church took no responsibility then for sexual abuse, harm and humiliation of very vulnerable young children in their care.
The Scottish hierarchy is in disgrace: homophobia, and priestly abuse have thrown it into crisis. The children it harmed are still waiting for the Church to confront its own history.
Don’t let anyone think the crisis is just about arch-bigot Cardinal O’Brien.
It is unfortunate what has happened with the Church in Scotland and when Christ makes his final Judgement these souls that committed these terrible acts will indeed go to hell. The one good thing that comes from this is that now a light has been put on it. It is a chance for change and reform so that the next 100years do not reflect the previous. I think it is also a foolish Idea to be misled into thinking this is a “Catholic” problem, we’ve seen evidence of abuses of power by many of those we least expect it from in Scottish society from Soldiers in Iraq to Care homes and various other Children’s organisations (Non Catholic) have all been affected by various abuses, what makes it particularly damning for the Catholic Church is that those abusers are expected to know better. It is a fact that Catholics in Scotland are a minority and it can be easier to scrutinise a particular group however a broader view of abuse must be taken as it is as wide spread in Scotland as would first appear and is maybe blindsided given all the attention being shifted to the Catholic Church, better to be the bully than the bullied perhaps.
